Sonu Nigam on sending his son out of India: I wanted him to have a normal childhood

A Story by Jasmine Kaur
Introduction
Sonu Nigam says that he and wife Madhurima didn’t want to ruin their son’s childhood and wanted him to live a normal childhood where he has friends and doesn’t have to go to appearances, shoots, and parties. That’s why they decided to take him to Dubai.
Being in the public eye is not easy, something that Sonu Nigam recognized very early on when he sent his son Neevan out of India.
In 2012, my son became a star on his own,” Nigam explains in reference to the time when Nevaan, then four, recorded his own version of the song Kolaveri Di by Dhanush.
Furthermore, the singer says, “But if you make a big deal out of it, then that’s the problem.”. If I wanted to show my child around every party and if I wanted my son to come out with new songs then he would have been pressured. His childhood wasn’t something we wanted to taint as parents. He should have a normal childhood where he has friends, normal friends, and he shouldn’t have to go to appearances, shoots, and parties.”
This is why he and his wife Madhurima decided to send him to Dubai to live and study there.
“I wanted my son to study and live in a country outside of India that is not too far away. As my wife and I both have green cards, and my son is a US citizen, we planned to move to the USA in 2009. However, commuting from LA to Mumbai is very challenging. As a result, I decided to give up the idea of living in LA. “Dubai is close to Mumbai,” said the singer.
Even as he shuttles between Dubai and Mumbai, he is glad to have given his son a normal childhood.
“We made sure he had a normal childhood.”. Now, his friends are Brazilians and Germans, something I never had the opportunity to experience growing up.”
